Blessed Christopher Wharton, Catholic Academy Trust

What to expect during your training

Overview

Our Initial Teacher Training program offers a comprehensive, school-based approach to teacher training, culminating in a PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) accredited by Leeds Trinity University, a leader in teacher training.

On being accepted onto the course, we will consider your needs and place you in a school as close to your locality as possible. You start in school on day 1 in early September and then receive intensive university- led teaching to learn the fundamental theories to enable you to be successful in the classroom. Alongside this, you have one day a week in the classroom of your placement school and one day accessing the most up-to-date training from experienced leaders in the Blessed Christopher Wharton Catholic Academy Trust (BCWCAT) and BKCAT.

As the term progresses, you take on more of the class teacher role and have extended teaching responsibilities within your placement classroom.

In January, the new term starts with a new school-based placement in a contrasting school to your first one, so you are equipped to teach in any school as you move through your teaching career.

As before, on-going training from our senior leaders, interwoven with the university-led training will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to feel confident in the classroom as your teaching commitment increases.

Finally, in April, you begin your third and final school-based experience in another year group. This is where you will teach around 80% of the class timetable, being supported all the way to succeed and secure your first teaching job for the following September.

Early Years (Ages 3-7)

As a trainee in the Early Years pathway, you'll gain hands-on experience in Nursery, Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 classrooms. Our outstanding Early Years staff and experienced Lead Mentor will provide tailored support focused on early childhood development, ensuring you have the skills and knowledge to foster young learners' growth.

General Primary (Ages 5-11)

For those training in the General Primary pathway, your placements will cover Reception through Year 6. You'll be equipped to teach across all primary stages, with specific guidance from our dedicated staff and Lead Mentor on how to support children's development and prepare them for future educational milestones.

Course Qualifications
